In this present time of global biodiversity, social and climate crises, how can love show us the way?

The mindfulness practices as taught by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh help us cultivate greater understanding, healing and transformation. They are a path of great love – one that does not demand anything in return, that expands us, that frees us from individual and collective fears, greed, and illusion. A kind of love that liberates us to engage in ways that can contribute to a better world for all.

For the first time, Plum Village is hosting a global Earth Retreat that unfolds both on-site and online. We will learn mindfulness practices that help us cultivate happiness, love and freedom, and join in workshops and panels on the themes of spirituality & activism; social & racial justice; how to take care of our grief and “eco-anxiety”; among others. Together we will cultivate peace and the insight of Inter-being which can surely be the ground for a better future for all on Earth.

Multiple Price Tiers and Scholarships Available

Retreat organizers especially encourage black, indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), LGBTQIA+, young practitioners, and additional marginalized identities to attend. No one will be turned away.

The retreat organizing team is committed to equity and making this retreat accessible to all practitioners around the globe. We recognize that our current price tiers reflect a middle-class income set in US dollars, which may not be availed by the majority of peoples throughout the world.

Our option for scholarships is dedicated especially to students and the youth, those without regular income, and friends across the global South. If you want to attend the online retreat and your budget does not allow for it at this moment, we encourage you to fill out the short scholarship application form. Please find the link to the “Choose your contribution” page. This will help us understand your circumstances and we will reply with specific registration instructions.

Hello, beloved beings! My name is Maíra Fernandes de Melo (Engaged Serenity of the Heart) and I’m a member of the Earth Holder Community’s Care Taking Council. From the stolen lands of Tupinambá people - today known as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - I welcome you to the online “Love is Freedom” Earth Retreat.

What does it mean to love? What does it mean to love the Earth in the face of our current crises? What does mindfulness have to do with it? How can Engaged Buddhism help?

The planet is poisoned with chemicals but also with our unwholesome seeds. Greed (colonialism, imperialism, extractivism), hatred (racism, queerphobia, xenophobia, ableism, religious intolerance), and illusion (consumerism, speciesism) are at the very foundation of our environmental crisis, a crisis of our whole civilization model - ultimately a crisis of Love.

Throughout this retreat, we will practice together to love ourselves, one another, and the Earth. We will learn ways to take care of our suffering and the suffering of the Earth, and to act from a place of love and connection instead of anger or despair. We will practice breathing and finding peace in each and every moment, and to allow ourselves to believe that freedom is possible.

Trusting that there is life outside the prisons of our wrong views, we aspire to find other ways of living together, and cocreate new ways of walking peacefully on this most beautiful planet.

Thank you for the courage to show up for yourself, for every living being and for the Earth. Let’s flow together as a river of love!
